Cribbage Rules

Cribbage Rules (With 3-Track Cribbage Board Scoring)

Goal:
Cribbage is a classic card game where the goal is to be the first player to reach 121 points. You score points through various card combinations, both during the play phase (called "pegging") and when you score your hand (called "the show"). The "crib" is a separate hand scored by the dealer at the end of each round.

---

Players
Cribbage can be played with 2 to 4 players, though it's most commonly played by 2 players. The rules are similar no matter how many people are playing, but there are slight differences in the deal.

- 2 players: Each player gets 6 cards
- 3 players: Each player gets 5 cards
- 4 players: Each player gets 6 cards.

At the start of the game, each player will discard a set number of cards into the crib, which the dealer will score at the end.

Card Values
Here’s a quick rundown of how cards are valued in Cribbage:
- Ace = 1 point
- 2-10 = Face value (2-10)
- Jack, Queen, King = 10 points

---
The Deal
- The dealer is chosen randomly, and they deal cards to the players. After the deal, everyone discards some cards to the crib.
- 2-player game: Each player discards two cards.
- 3- or 4-player game: Each player discards one card to the crib.
- The starter card is the top card of the deck after it’s shuffled and cut by the non-dealer. This card is important for scoring later, so pay attention to it!

Gameplay Phases

There are two main phases in Cribbage: The Play (or Pegging) and The Show (when you score your hand).

1. The Play (Pegging)
In this phase, players take turns playing cards, trying to create point-scoring combinations. The goal is to score points while building a running total (or "count").

- Players alternate playing one card at a time, with the running total of the cards being kept track of. You can’t go over 31.
- For example, if you play a 5, the total is 5; if the next card is a 7, the total becomes 12, and so on.
- If you can’t play a card without going over 31, you say "Go". Your opponent scores 1 point, and they keep playing.
- Once no one can play, the round ends, and the total resets to 0.

How points are scored during the play:

- 15s: If the total reaches 15, you score 2 points. For example, if you play a 5 and the total is 10, and you play a 5 again, you get 2 points for making 15.
- Pairs: If you play a card that matches the previous card, you score 2 points for a pair. For example, if the last card was a 7, and you play another 7, you score 2 points.
- Runs: A run is a sequence of three or more consecutive cards. For example, a 3-4-5 is a 3-card run, worth 3 points. A 4-5-6-7 would be a 4-card run, worth 4 points.
- 31: If you play a card that brings the total to exactly 31, you score 2 points.
- Go: If you can’t play without going over 31, you say "Go", and your opponent scores 1 point. If no one can play anymore, the total resets to 0.

2. The Show (Scoring Your Hand and the Crib)
After the play phase, each player reveals their hand of cards. You score your hand based on combinations of cards, using the starter card to help form combos.

How points are scored in the show:

- 15s: Any combination of cards that add up to 15 scores 2 points. For example, if your hand has a 10, a 5, and the starter card is a Jack (worth 10), you have a 15, and you score 2 points.
- Pairs: If you have two cards of the same value, that’s a pair, and you score 2 points. A pair of Jacks, for example, scores 2 points.
- Runs: A run is a sequence of three or more consecutive cards. For example, a 3-4-5 is a run worth 3 points. A 4-5-6-7 would be a run worth 4 points.
- Flush: If all the cards in your hand (including the starter card) are the same suit, that’s a flush, and it scores 4 points. If the starter card is also the same suit, it’s worth 5 points.
- Nobs: If you have a Jack in your hand that matches the suit of the starter card, you score 1 point for nobs.

After both players score their hands, the dealer scores the crib in the same way, using the four discarded cards.

Scoring on a 3-Track Cribbage Board

To keep track of your score in Cribbage, you use a cribbage board. A 3-track board has three rows of holes for pegs, typically with 121 total holes (one for each point up to 121). Each player uses two pegs of a different color, and you’ll move them along the board as you score points.

Here’s how scoring works with the 3-track cribbage board:

- Each player has two pegs on the board. When you score, you move one of your pegs forward the corresponding number of holes.
- After each hand, you move your peg to show how many points you've earned that round. When you hit 121 points, you win the game!

Using the 3-Track Board:
- The three tracks on the board are just visual tools; they make it easier to see both players’ progress at once.
- Each player keeps track of their score using one of their pegs on each track. The pegs will "race" towards the 121-point hole, and the first one to reach it wins.

The 3-track board doesn't change the basic gameplay, but it can make scoring faster and more visually clear, especially if you're playing with more than two players.

Winning the Game
The game ends when one player reaches 121 points. Players can score points in the play phase (when you’re playing cards) or during the show (when you reveal your hand). You can reach 121 during the play phase, but once a player gets there, the game is over.

---

Optional Rules

- Muggins: If you miss a point combination during your scoring (for example, forgetting a pair or a 15), your opponent can shout "Muggins" and steal those points.

- Pegging Out: If a player reaches 121 points during the play phase, they win right away, even before the hand is scored.

---

Quick Scoring Summary

During the Play (Pegging):
- 15s: 2 points
- Pair: 2 points
- Run: 3 or more consecutive cards (3 cards = 3 points, etc.)
- 31: 2 points

---

Strategy Tips
- Watch your discards: The crib is a big deal for the dealer, so don’t discard cards that could help your opponent.
- Play smart: During the play phase, try to avoid setting your opponent up for easy points, like pairs, runs, or 15s.
- Keep track of the starter card: The starter card can help create combinations in your hand, so keep it in mind when forming your hand and playing cards.
